Review: Emerging Automotive Technologies MicroMasters

NOTE: This MicroMasters Program will no longer be offered after December, 2023. However, you would still be able to enroll for the individual courses.

I recently completed the Emerging Automotive Technologies MicroMasters program offered by Chalmers University of Technology via the edX platform, and highly recommend it for anyone looking to get up-to-date with current automotive technologies. The program is also accessible to those working full-time jobs, with courses structured to balance the demands of work and learning. The following courses are included in the program:

  • Electric and Conventional Vehicles
  • Hybrid Vehicles
  • Road Traffic Safety in Automotive Engineering
  • Model-Based Automotive Systems Engineering
  • Decision-making for Autonomous Systems
  • Sensor-Fusion and Non-Linear Filtering for Automotive Systems
  • Multi-Object Tracking for Automotive Systems

One of the most significant take-aways from the program was the importance of starting with the Electric and Conventional Vehicles, Hybrid Vehicles, and Road Traffic Safety courses. These topics are vital to understanding the current and future technologies of the automotive industry and will give you a strong foundation for future coursework.

The program is designed to be taken one course at a time, which is especially helpful for those of us who work full-time jobs. This approach allows you to focus on mastering one topic before moving on to the next. Additionally, the progression of the courses is well thought-out, and as you complete each course, your Matlab skills will improve, making homeworks and projects in subsequent courses easier to work through.

The program focuses on various aspects of automotive engineering, including model-based design and technologies that enable autonomous driving. However, I found that the Sensor-Fusion and Multi-Object Tracking courses required the most advanced Matlab programming skills. While the assignments were challenging, completing them gave me a sense of accomplishment.

Overall, I highly recommend these courses to anyone working in the automotive sector who wants to improve their skills and knowledge. The course structure is flexible enough to fit into a busy work schedule, and the progression of topics is logical and easy to follow. By the end of the program, you will have gained a better understanding of the most relevant topics in automotive engineering and significantly improved your Matlab programming skills.
